START21ART Competition Rules

Article I.
General Provisions
1.1. The START21ART 2026/27 Competition Rules are a binding document that sets out the detailed rules and conditions of the fine arts Competition organised by NADÁCIA KUBIKUM. The purpose of these Rules is to define the rules and conditions of the Competition clearly and unambiguously.
1.2. The Competition is intended for selected final-year students from arts-focused secondary schools, as specified in Article IV of these Rules.
1.3. By registering for the Competition, participants confirm their agreement to these Rules electronically. Such confirmation is a condition of participation in the Competition.
Article II.
Promoter and Organiser
2.1. The promoter and organiser of the Competition is NADÁCIA KUBIKUM, established on 7 July 2010 under registration number 203/Na-2002/956, with its registered office at Hálkova 2968/22, 010 01 Žilina, Slovak Republic, Company ID No. 42213495 (hereinafter referred to as the "Promoter" or the "Organiser").
2.2. The Organiser's main communication channels for all matters related to the Competition, including registration under Article IX of these Rules, are:

Unless otherwise stated, the applicable website is determined by the country in which the school has its registered office.
Article III.
Purpose of the Competition
3.1. The main purpose of the Competition is to support and promote young artists at the beginning of their professional careers and help them:
  • prepare for professional artistic practice or a career in the arts,
  • gain practical experience and become familiar with the art sector,
  • develop their authorial skills and gain a better understanding of copyright rights and responsibilities, including self-reliance, self-discipline, and continuous learning.
3.2. The Competition also aims to:
  • increase the visibility of young artists and students,
  • provide positive role models for other young artists,
  • promote artistic role models,
  • raise awareness of artists, their works, art schools, and cultural institutions,
  • support artistic creation,
  • support arts education, schools, and educators,
  • support art and culture at national, regional, and local levels.
Article IV.
Contestants
4.1. The Competition is open to selected final-year students from arts-focused secondary schools (hereinafter referred to as the "Contestant", the "Author", or the "Student"). To be eligible, a student must be nominated by the school in which they are currently enrolled (hereinafter referred to as the "School" or the "Nominating School"). The School determines the method of selecting nominated Students. A school may participate in the Competition and nominate Contestants only if at least 50% of the study fields or programmes it offers are arts-related. To participate in the Competition, Students must have reached the age of majority at the time of registration and be registered in the KUBIKUM register no later than the student registration deadline specified in Article VI.
4.2. A school may nominate a maximum of 10% of its final-year students enrolled in artistic fields or programmes during the current school year. The following ratio applies: one nominated Contestant for every group of up to ten final-year students enrolled in artistic fields or programmes. For example, if a school has 1–10 final-year students enrolled in artistic fields or programmes, it may nominate one Contestant. If it has 11 students, it may nominate two Contestants, and so on.
Article V.
Mentors
5.1. Contestants may be supervised during the Competition by a teacher from the Nominating School (hereinafter referred to as the "Mentor"). Each Contestant may have a maximum of two Mentors. The Contestant provides the Mentor's details when registering their Competition Work. The Promoter recommends that each Contestant have at least one Mentor.
5.2. Mentors are not entitled to financial remuneration or any prize in connection with the Competition.
5.3. A Mentor may also serve as a juror in the Competition.

6.2. Unless otherwise stated, each deadline expires at 23:59:59 on the specified date.
Article VII.
Competition Work
7.1. Each Author may submit only one Work to the Competition.
7.2. The Work must be created exclusively for this Competition and must not have been exhibited or entered into any other competition before the Competition.
7.3. The theme of the Work is Horizons.
7.4. The Author is free to choose the technique unless otherwise specified by the Organiser. The Work must be two-dimensional and tangible (for example, it may not be a video).
7.5. The dimensions of the Competition Work must be at least 297 × 420 mm and no larger than 100 × 100 cm. In the case of multi-part works (polyptychs), the combined dimensions of all parts must comply with these size limits.
7.6. The Work must be signed by the Author and labelled on the reverse in accordance with the Promoter's requirements. A template label will be generated after registration and must be completed by the Author. If the Work is a graphic print or a photograph, the Author must register and label the first original authorial print of the graphic work or photograph in the same manner.
7.7. Works created by multiple authors are not permitted.
7.8. The Competition Work of each registered Student must be approved by the Nominating School.
7.9. The Work is evaluated based on its digitised form.
7.9.1. The required parameters for the digitised form of the Work are a minimum of 3,000 px and a minimum resolution of 72 dpi.
7.9.2. The maximum file size for the digitised form of the Work is 10 MB.
7.9.3. Permitted file formats are JPEG, SVG, and PNG.
7.9.4. The photograph of the Work, particularly its colour reproduction, must accurately reflect the original Work.
7.9.5. The Student must submit a representative photograph of the Work for the purposes of the commemorative publication referred to in Article X, Section 10.5 of these Rules and a positional photograph for evaluation in the Competition. The Work must be photographed to show both its front and reverse, with the label referred to in Section 7.6 of these Rules clearly visible.
7.9.6. Registration of the Work also requires at least one contextual photograph showing the Work displayed in a physical environment (for example, hung on a wall or placed on a stand or easel), so that it is clearly shown in its intended setting.
7.9.7. If the Work is digital, it must be printed and prepared for display in a physical environment. The contextual photograph referred to in Section 7.9.6 must show the Work in this printed form. If such a Work is sold at auction, the Contestant must deliver the printed version to the buyer.
7.9.8. When registering the Work, the Contestant must provide information about the Work, including its title and description, primarily in English. The same information may also be provided in the official language of the Nominating School.
7.9.9. The Student is responsible for preparing and uploading the digitised form of the Work to the system in the required quality.
7.10. Upon registration of the Work, the Nominating School confirms that the Work and its digitised form comply with the Competition Rules. Once confirmed, the Work is officially entered into the Competition, and no further changes may be made to the Work or its digitised form.
7.11. The Promoter reserves the right to exclude from the Competition any Work that does not comply with these Rules or is offensive, defamatory, contrary to good morals, or harmful to the Promoter's reputation.
7.12. The Promoter is entitled to exclude from the Competition any Work where there is reasonable suspicion of plagiarism or another infringement of a third party's copyright. Before deciding whether to exclude such a Work, the Promoter must give the Nominating School and the Contestant a reasonable opportunity to comment on the suspicion and must obtain an expert opinion from at least one Competition juror or Mentor. The Promoter decides whether to exclude the Work after considering the submitted statements and the expert opinion. The Promoter's decision is final. This does not affect the Promoter's other rights under these Rules or the liability of the School and the Contestant under this Article.

The School or the Contestant, as applicable, remains responsible for the Work, particularly for its quality and compliance with legal and ethical standards.
7.13. From the moment the Competition Work is registered, the Promoter acquires, under the Licence Agreement concluded with the Author, the right to use the Work in any manner for the purposes of the Competition and for promoting the Work. The Promoter also has the right to sell the Work on behalf of the Contestant at auction under the Consignment Sale Agreement, in accordance with Article XI of these Rules. The Contestant concludes the Licence Agreement by completing and submitting the electronic form displayed after registering the Work. The Consignment Sale Agreement is concluded in the same manner when the Work is submitted to the auction. Failure to complete or submit the Licence Agreement form to the Organiser constitutes grounds for excluding the Work from the Competition. Failure to conclude the Consignment Sale Agreement when submitting the Work to the auction will prevent the Work from being included in the auction.
7.14. After the Competition, the digitised form of the Work remains published on www.start21art.cz, www.start21art.pl, www.start21art.hu or www.start21art.sk (depending on the country where the school is based) and on www.start21art.eu (for final Competition Works) as a Competition Work for the relevant competition year.
7.15. The Competition includes a public electronic auction of the Competition Works. The conditions governing the auction are set out in Article XI of these Rules.
Article VIII.
Jury and Evaluation of Competition Works
8.1. At Level I of the Competition, the Competition Works are evaluated by a jury consisting of representatives from the Nominating Schools and further representatives from the fields of artistic practice and education. Separate juries are established for the Czech Republic, the Republic of Poland, Hungary, and the Slovak Republic.
8.2. Each Nominating School may nominate one juror for Level I of the Competition. The juror evaluates Competition Works submitted by students from schools in the same country as the Nominating School. For this purpose, each school receives a juror code, which may be used only if the school has registered at least one Contestant.
8.3. Additional representatives from the fields of artistic practice and education are appointed by the Organiser to each national jury.
8.4. At Level I, the Competition Works are evaluated separately for the Czech Republic, the Republic of Poland, Hungary, and the Slovak Republic in accordance with the evaluation rules set out below.
8.4.1. The Competition Works are evaluated online, and each juror evaluates the submitted Works based on their digitised form.
8.4.2. Each juror evaluates the Works identified only by an assigned code. The names and other personal details of the Authors are not disclosed to the jurors.
8.4.3. Each juror selects the 21 best Competition Works at their discretion and assigns each Work a unique score from 1 to 21, with 21 points awarded to the best Work, 20 points to the second-best Work, and so on. Each score may be used only once, meaning that no two Works may receive the same score from the same juror.
8.4.4. Jurors must keep their evaluations and the scores assigned to the Competition Works confidential throughout the evaluation process. They are also required to evaluate all Competition Works objectively.
8.4.5. The final ranking of the Competition Works is determined by the total number of points awarded by all jurors.
8.4.6. In the event of a tie, the final ranking and the distribution of prizes are decided by the Promoter.
8.4.7. The jury's decision is final and cannot be appealed.
8.5. In the final round of the Competition, the Competition Works are evaluated by a joint international jury representing the Czech Republic, the Republic of Poland, Hungary, and the Slovak Republic. The final jury is appointed by the Organiser, and its members may, but are not required to, have served as Level I jurors.
8.6. All winning Works from Level I advance to the final round, comprising 21 Works from the Czech Republic, 21 Works from the Republic of Poland, 21 Works from Hungary, and 21 Works from the Slovak Republic. The 21 best Works from Level I in each participating country are hereinafter referred to as the "TOP21", and all of them together as the "TOP84". These Works are evaluated in accordance with the following rules.
8.6.1. The Competition Works are evaluated online, and each juror evaluates the submitted Works based on their digitised form.
8.6.2. Each juror evaluates the Works identified by the names of the Authors and the names of the schools that nominated them.
8.6.3. Each juror selects the 21 best Competition Works at their discretion and assigns each Work a unique score from 1 to 21, with 21 points awarded to the best Work, 20 points to the second-best Work, and so on. Each score may be used only once, meaning that no two Works may receive the same score from the same juror.
8.6.4. Jurors must keep their evaluations and the scores assigned to the Competition Works confidential throughout the evaluation process. They are also required to evaluate all Competition Works objectively.
8.6.5. The final ranking of the Competition Works is determined by the total number of points awarded by all jurors.
8.6.6. In the event of a tie, the final ranking and the distribution of prizes are decided by the Promoter.
8.6.7. The jury's decision is final and cannot be appealed.
8.7. Level I or the final round of the Competition may be held only if at least 22 Works are registered. At Level I, this requirement applies separately to the Czech Republic, the Republic of Poland, Hungary, and the Slovak Republic. For the final round, it applies to all participating countries together. If fewer than 22 Works are registered at Level I in any country, Level I will not be held in that country, and all registered Works will automatically advance to the final round. If fewer than 22 Works from all participating countries advance to the final round, the Organiser reserves the right to cancel the Competition or to provide all or part of the prizes to the participating Students in the form of support for their continuing education.
Article IX.
Conditions of Registration
9.1. Conditions and Registration Procedure for Schools
9.1.1. A school enters the Competition by registering via the online form on www.start21art.cz, www.start21art.pl, www.start21art.hu or www.start21art.sk (depending on the country where the school is based) within the period specified in the Competition Schedule (Article VI of these Rules). During registration, the school must indicate the number of students it is entitled to nominate to the Competition in accordance with the ratio set out in Article IV, Section 4.2 of these Rules.
9.1.2. Once the school's registration has been successfully completed, unique registration codes are generated for the nominated Contestants and the juror nominated by the school. These codes are required for registration in the Competition.
9.1.3. The school must provide these codes to the nominated juror and to the nominated Students who meet the conditions set out in Article IV, Section 4.1 of these Rules. The selection of the nominated Students is the responsibility of the school.
9.1.4. No later than the deadline for school registration specified in the Competition Schedule, the school must publish either the START21ART Competition logo or the START21ART Competition banner on its website. The school may choose from the pre-prepared options provided after registration and must include a link to www.start21art.cz, www.start21art.pl, www.start21art.hu or www.start21art.sk (depending on the country where the school is based). The selected logo or banner must remain published on the school's website throughout the duration of the Competition. If the school fails to comply with this requirement, the Organiser may determine that the Competition Rules have been breached and may refuse to provide to the school the prizes, awards and remuneration referred to in Article X of these Rules.
9.1.5. By registering for the Competition, the school confirms its acceptance of these Competition Rules.
9.2. Conditions and Registration Procedure for Students
9.2.1. A Student enters the Competition by registering via the online form on www.start21art.cz, www.start21art.pl, www.start21art.hu or www.start21art.sk (depending on the country where the school is based) using the code provided by the Nominating School. Registration must be completed within the period specified in the Competition Schedule (Article VI of these Rules).
9.2.2. By registering for the Competition, the Student confirms acceptance of these Competition Rules.
9.3. Conditions and Registration Procedure for Competition Works
9.3.1. A registered Student submits a Work to the Competition by registering it and uploading its digitised form to the designated section of www.start21art.cz, www.start21art.pl, www.start21art.hu or www.start21art.sk (depending on the country where the school is based) within the period specified in the Competition Schedule (Article VI of these Rules).
9.3.2. The Student is responsible for preparing and uploading the digitised form of the Work to the system in the required quality, in accordance with Article VII, Section 7.9 of these Rules.
9.3.3. When registering the Competition Work, the Student must provide the name of the Mentor who supervised the Student during the Competition.
9.3.4. The registered Work must be approved by the Nominating School in accordance with Article VII, Section 7.10 of these Rules.
9.3.5. Once the Work has been approved by the Nominating School, it is officially entered into the Competition, and no further changes may be made to the Work or its digitised form.
9.4. Conditions and Registration Procedure for Jurors Nominated by Participating Schools
9.4.1. Each participating school may nominate one juror. For this purpose, the school is provided with a unique registration code for the juror. The code may be used only after at least one Contestant from the school has been registered.
9.4.2. A juror enters the Competition by registering via the online form on www.start21art.cz, www.start21art.pl, www.start21art.hu or www.start21art.sk (depending on the country where the school is based) using the code provided by the Nominating School. Registration must be completed within the period specified in the Competition Schedule (Article VI of these Rules).
9.4.3. By registering for the Competition, the juror agrees to evaluate the Competition Works in accordance with Article VIII, in particular Section 8.4 and the following provisions of these Rules, to the best of their knowledge and conscience, and in accordance with generally accepted ethical principles.
9.4.4. By registering for the Competition, the juror confirms acceptance of these Competition Rules.
9.5. Conditions and Registration Procedure for Jurors Nominated by the Organiser
9.5.1. A juror enters the Competition by registering via the online form on www.start21art.cz, www.start21art.pl, www.start21art.hu or www.start21art.sk (depending on the country designated by the Organiser) using the code provided in the invitation email sent by the Organiser. Registration must be completed within the period specified in the Competition Schedule (Article VI of these Rules).
9.5.2. A juror nominated by the Organiser must not be employed by, or have a similar contractual relationship with, a school participating in the Competition.
9.5.3. By registering for the Competition, the juror agrees to evaluate the Competition Works in accordance with Article VIII, in particular Section 8.4 and the following provisions of these Rules, to the best of their knowledge and conscience, and in accordance with generally accepted ethical principles.
9.5.4. By registering for the Competition, the juror confirms acceptance of these Competition Rules.
Article X.
Prizes, Awards and Remuneration
10.1. All participating Students receive, as remuneration for taking part in the Competition, in-kind prizes determined by the Promoter, one-year registration in the KUBIKUM register with the KUBIKUM GOLD package, and one confirmation of registration for the Competition Work. An author's certificate for the Competition Work is not issued automatically. It is issued only upon the Contestant's request and only for Works included in the auction in accordance with Article XI of these Rules.
10.2. Students whose Works are ranked 1st to 3rd at Level I in each participating country receive the following monetary prizes: EUR 630 for 1st place, EUR 420 for 2nd place, and EUR 210 for 3rd place. If, in accordance with Article VIII, Section 8.7, Level I of the Competition is not held in a particular country due to an insufficient number of registered Works, the Organiser may instead provide the prize as support for the Contestant's education.
10.3. Students who place 1st at Level I are offered the opportunity to serve on the Level I jury in the following year's Competition. This does not apply if Level I is not held due to an insufficient number of registered Works in accordance with Article VIII, Section 8.7.
10.4. Schools whose Student places 1st at Level I receive a prize of EUR 2,121 from the Promoter to support the further development of arts education. This does not apply if Level I is not held due to an insufficient number of registered Works in accordance with Article VIII, Section 8.7.
10.5. Each Contestant whose Competition Work advances to the final round of the Competition in accordance with Article VIII, Section 8.6 of these Rules is entitled to one copy of the commemorative publication featuring the Competition Works and the profiles of the participating Students. The publication is not dispatched to the Contestant automatically. Each entitled Contestant receives a code enabling the Contestant to order one copy of the publication free of charge. The Promoter determines the form of the publication, which may be printed or electronic, as well as its scope, the manner of ordering and the period of validity of the code.
10.6. Students ranked 1st to 3rd in the final receive the following monetary prizes: EUR 3,000 for 1st place, EUR 2,000 for 2nd place, and EUR 1,000 for 3rd place. In addition, they receive a second one-year registration in the KUBIKUM register with the KUBIKUM GOLD package, provided for the year following the registration under Article X, Section 10.1 of these Rules, five authors' certificates, and five confirmations of registration for Works sold through the KUBIKUM register. Payment of the monetary prize does not transfer ownership of the prize-winning Work (its physical medium) to the Organiser. The physical medium of every Work, including prize-winning Works, remains subject to sale at the auction in accordance with Article XI of these Rules. The unlimited, royalty-free licence to use the Work in any manner granted to the Promoter under the Licence Agreement remains unaffected.
10.7. Students ranked 1st to 3rd in the final may receive additional in-kind or monetary prizes determined by the Organiser or the Competition partners.
10.8. After the Competition, all Works that have advanced to the final, including the prize-winning Works referred to in Section 10.6 of these Rules, are entered into a public auction under the Consignment Sale Agreement. Once the auction has concluded and the buyer confirms receipt of the Work, the Author receives 80% of the hammer price, while the remaining 20% constitutes the Organiser's commission. Concluding the Consignment Sale Agreement and entering the Work into the public auction are conditions for receiving the prizes referred to in Section 10.6 of these Rules. The Contestant is responsible for arranging the shipment of the original Work to the buyer in accordance with Article XI of these Rules. The Organiser does not arrange the collection or transport of original Works and intervenes in the relationship between the seller and the buyer only as regards the settlement of financial flows.
10.9. Income from the sale of a Work, as well as monetary prizes and other monetary considerations provided to the winners under these Rules, is subject to taxation in accordance with the legislation in force at the time of payment, including Act No. 595/2003 Coll. on Income Tax, as amended, and the applicable legislation of the Czech Republic, the Republic of Poland and Hungary. Where required by the applicable tax legislation governing the Contestant's income, the Organiser, as the payer of the income, may deduct and remit withholding tax from the relevant monetary prize, payment for the sale of a Work, or other monetary consideration. In such cases, the Contestant receives the payment net of the applicable withholding tax. In all other cases, the Contestant is responsible for fulfilling any tax or other legal obligations relating to such income or prizes.
10.10. The START21ART Competition also includes a separate ONLINE STAR competition for the Works that have advanced to the TOP84. The winner is determined through a public online vote conducted via the Organiser's website. Voting takes place within the period specified in the Competition Schedule (Article VI of these Rules), and each natural person may vote only once. The Organiser determines the detailed voting procedure and the method of verifying votes.
10.11. The winner of the ONLINE STAR competition is the Contestant whose Work receives the highest number of valid votes in the online voting referred to in the preceding Section. The winner receives a monetary prize of EUR 210. The provisions of Article X, Section 10.9 of these Rules apply mutatis mutandis to the payment and taxation of this prize.
Article XI.
Electronic Auction of Competition Works and Handover of Prizes
11.1. The Competition does not include an in-person exhibition of the Competition Works. After the final results are announced, the prizes referred to in Article X of these Rules are awarded. The date, venue, method and other details of the prize ceremony are determined by the Organiser.
11.2. All Competition Works that have advanced to the final, including the prize-winning Works referred to in Article X, Section 10.6 of these Rules, are entered into the public auction on www.kubikum.com in accordance with the website's general terms and conditions. Contestants whose Works have not advanced to the final may also request to participate in the auction. A Work may be included in the auction only after the Contestant has concluded the Consignment Sale Agreement when submitting the Work to the auction.
11.3. The Organiser determines the conditions, procedure, venue and schedule of the auction.
11.4. The auction is organised by NADÁCIA KUBIKUM.
11.5. The starting bid for each Work is EUR 42.
11.6. Every Contestant whose Competition Work is sold at the auction is responsible for shipping the Work to the buyer at the Contestant's own expense and responsibility, regardless of whether the Work is part of the TOP84. If an author's certificate has been issued for the Competition Work in accordance with Article X, Section 10.1 of these Rules, it must be included with the shipment. The Organiser may provide the Contestant with an advance towards the shipping costs, up to the maximum postage amount determined by the Organiser. The Contestant is liable to the Organiser for any damage resulting from failure to fulfil this obligation. The Organiser does not arrange the collection or transport of original Works. The dispatch of the Work and the relationship with the buyer are settled directly between the Contestant, as the seller, and the buyer. Payment is released to the Contestant only after the buyer has confirmed receipt of the Work.
11.7. Payment of the prizes referred to in Article X of these Rules, as well as payment of the purchase price for a Work pursuant to Article X, Section 10.8 of these Rules, is conditional upon the fulfilment of all requirements set out in these Rules, from registration through to the completion of the auction.
Article XII.
Final Provisions
12.1. The prizes, awards and remuneration provided under these Rules constitute a natural obligation. Neither participation in the Competition nor such prizes, awards and remuneration can be claimed through legal action or exchanged for any alternative financial compensation; where the Organiser provides them, such performance is valid and does not constitute unjust enrichment on the part of the recipient. Winners are not entitled to any remuneration other than that specified in these Rules. Likewise, participants are not entitled to any benefits from the Organiser beyond those expressly set out in these Rules.
12.2. Unless otherwise stated in these Rules, all costs related to participation in the Competition are borne by the Contestants, Schools or Mentors, depending on who incurs them. No participant is entitled to reimbursement of these costs from another participant or from the Organiser.
12.3. The Promoter reserves the right to amend these Competition Rules at any time, as well as to shorten, postpone, suspend or cancel the Competition without stating a reason or providing compensation. Any amendments must be effected in the same manner as that in which the Competition was announced.
12.4. By participating in the Competition, participants grant the Organiser consent to the processing of all personal data provided by them. The Organiser may process personal data solely for the purposes of organising, administering, promoting and evaluating the Competition, in accordance with Act No. 18/2018 Coll. on Personal Data Protection and on the Amendment of Certain Acts, as amended, and Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation – GDPR). Consent is voluntary, granted for an indefinite period and may be withdrawn at any time, free of charge, by written notice delivered to the Organiser. However, if consent is withdrawn during the Competition, the participant will be excluded from the Competition.
12.5. By participating in the Competition, participants and winners also consent to being invited to take part in promotional activities without any additional consent or remuneration. Such promotional activities may include the publication of their names, photographs from the prize ceremony and similar promotional materials.
12.6. All personal data provided to the Organiser must be used exclusively for the purposes of the Competition and must not be disclosed to any third party, except where necessary for the organisation, administration or promotion of the Competition, as provided for in these Rules.
12.7. The Organiser is not liable for any technical issues arising during the electronic transmission of data or for any issues affecting the operation of the websites referred to in Article II, Section 2.2 of these Rules.
12.8. The Organiser is not liable for any damage arising from, or in connection with, the remuneration provided under these Rules. The Organiser reserves the right to replace any remuneration with another of a similar type and equivalent value, as well as to amend the conditions for its handover.
12.9. In the event of any discrepancy between these Competition Rules and the information contained in promotional or other public materials, these Competition Rules prevail.
12.10. The Organiser declares that all legal relationships arising out of or in connection with these Rules and the Competition are governed by the laws of the Slovak Republic. In the event of any inconsistency between the English version of these Rules, their annexes or any related documents and any translation into another language, the English-language version prevails.
12.11. These Rules enter into force on the date of the public announcement of the Competition.
